Nick Sogard

BOS Shortstop #75

Nick Sogard was pulled from Wednesday’s game against the Rangers in the ninth inning due to a calf injury.

Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora said in his postgame comments that Sogard fouled a ball off of his calf earlier in the game and it started to tighten up on him, which is why he was removed. It doesn’t sound like anything that should require an extended absence, so consider the 26-year-old infielder as day-to-day.
Romy Gonzalez

BOS Second Baseman #23

Romy Gonzalez went 1-for-1 with three RBI on Wednesday in a loss to the Rangers.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora had Gonzalez grab a bat to pinch-hit for Dominic Smith in the sixth inning and he came through with a sacrifice fly to center field. He stepped to the plate to face Rangers veteran reliever David Robertson and proceeded to chop a two-run double down the left-field line to give Boston a three-run lead. It’s performances like this from unheralded and relatively unknown contributors that have been the hallmark of the Red Sox surprising surge this season.
Josh Winckowski

BOS Relief Pitcher #25

Josh Winckowski allowed three runs in the ninth inning on Wednesday in a blown save against the Rangers.

Winckowski got the call to protect a three-run lead in the final frame with veteran stopper Kenley Jansen unavailable after working each of the previous two days and was unable to convert the save. He immediately gave up back-to-back singles to Corey Seager and Josh Smith before eventually coughing up a game-tying homer to rookie sensation Wyatt Langford with two outs in the frame.
Tanner Houck

BOS Starting Pitcher #89

Tanner Houck surrendered two runs over 6 2/2 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Rangers.

Houck gave up only six hits with a sixth-inning solo blast from Adolis García being the lone fly ball to leave the yard. He struck out three and only handed out a pair of free passes. He departed in line for the win, but Boston’s bullpen was unable to hang onto the lead. The 28-year-old righty has pitched well his past two times out after getting lit up for six runs by these same Rangers back on August 3. He’ll carry a solid 3.01 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 127/40 K/BB ratio across 146 2/3 innings (24 starts) into a tough road matchup on Monday against the Astros, who have been the best team in baseball since roughly mid-May.
Trevor Story

BOS Shortstop #10

Trevor Story (shoulder) took live batting practice on the field once again on Wednesday without any issues.

While Story was trying to keep a line drive approach in his swings, he hit several home runs during the session — which he did during his first round on Monday as well. The Red Sox still haven’t given any sort of definitive timetable for his potential return yet, but it looks increasingly likely that we’ll see Story once again before the 2024 season is through.
Liam Hendriks

BOS Relief Pitcher #31

Liam Hendriks, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, threw 24 pitches to hitters prior to Wednesday’s game.

This was supposed to be Hendriks’ last session before beginning a rehab assignment. It looks like he’ll have a chance of pitching for the Red Sox in September.
Jarren Duran

BOS Center Fielder #16

Jarren Duran is starting in left field and leading off Wednesday after completing his two-game suspension for using a slur on the field Sunday.

Rob Refsnyder is back on the bench tonight after starting both games while Duran was out.
Tyler O'Neill

BOS Right Fielder #17

Tyler O’Neill said that, prior to being discharged Tuesday, he spent four days in the hospital due to his leg infection.

O’Neill has resumed baseball activities already, and he’s hoping to return from the injured list in the near future. Ceddanne Rafaela has been a full-time outfielder since O’Neill went down, but he’ll probably resume playing a fair amount of shortstop after O’Neill gets back.
Enmanuel Valdez

BOS Third Baseman #47

Red Sox optioned Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Worcester.

Jarren Duran’s suspension is over, so Valdez goes to make room. He was 1-for-6 in his latest stint with the Red Sox. He’s hit .224/.282/.400 in 189 plate appearances overall this season.
Cam Booser

BOS Relief Pitcher #71

Red Sox placed LHP Cam Booser on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation.

Booser had a really tough outing last night, giving up one hit and two walks to the three batters he faced. He didn’t actually give up any runs, but he allowed all three inherited runners from Kutter Crawford to score. Booser has a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings this year.
